How Does Botox Work?

Botox®, botulinum toxin, is made from the bacteria that causes botulism. Botulinum toxin works to block nerve activity in the muscles.

Botox® is used to treat medical conditions, and cosmetically to remove wrinkles. Botox® injections should be administered only by a physician, nurse or medical professional, even when used for cosmetic purposes.

The effects of a Botox® injection are temporary. After an injection, your symptoms may return completely within three months. After repeat injections, it may take less time before your symptoms return, especially if your body develops antibodies to the botulinum toxin.

For example, jawline Botox is used to relax and balance overly gummy smiles and jaw-clenching that often leads to a square, masculine jaw in female patients, this has been popularly called “facial slimming” in the media. Patients with bells palsy and other muscle asymmetries may also benefit from these types of injections.
